WOW! Light Soju?

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

It appears things have changed since I left Korea:

“To counter Doosan’s rising sales, Jinro also introduced an all-new ‘Chamisul Fresh,’ aimed at attracting young adults, with a low alcohol content of 19.8 percent, down from 20.1 percent contained in the previous Chamisul, which means ‘real dew.’”

This is from a Korea Times article about consumption of soju.

New Camera!!!

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

To follow up my recent post about buying a new SD card, I decided to get a new camera. I knew the SD card would arrive yesterday so I checked the sales at Future Shop before I left work yesterday. The company I work for has a 38 hour work week, so we finish at 3PM on the last day of the week. Thus, I had some time to spare and decided to head over to the store to check out the cameras that were on sale.

At Bic Camera in Japan, and every other Japanese electronics store for that matter, you can play with at least a hundred different cameras and actually use them. At Future Shop, you can pick the camera up two inches above the counter and you can’t turn it on.

I eventually decided to get the Casio EX-Z1000 because it was tiny, had a huge LCD, was given a very good review, and it was $200 off. However, it seems like every time I buy something from Future Shop it becomes an ordeal. When I got the camera home, I found that the box had been opened, there was no manual or warranty card, and there were 2 pictures on the internal memory already.

I decided to keep the camera despite the missing objects because I really wanted a new toy. I’ve taken a few pictures with it so far, but nothing spectacular. Here is a photo I took this morning with it using the “Cross” best shot selector:

Close To Buying A New Camera

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

My Nikon Coolpix 4300 is getting kind of old. It is hard to focus close up shots properly for some reason and the timings are horribly slow. I have been updating the gallery lately and it has made me want to buy a new camera. I just placed an order for a ATP 2GB 150X SD card, for $91 after taxes and shipping, in anticipation for my next camera. I almost bought a new camera the other day too, but I still haven’t decided about all the features I want. I would really like to buy an entry level DSLR but I think that I might end up using it less because of the size and the inconvenience of carrying it around. I will probably end up buying a “prosumer” model that has image stabilization and a good video mode.

I Miss The Sauna

Saturday, January 13th, 2007

I have been going through old photos to upload to the gallery and I just saw a sauna near my first place in Seoul that I didn’t know was there. When I was working at Oedae some months I had to work a split shift and so I would go to the sauna during the day to relax and sleep until the second part of my shift. I really miss the cold water pool, the waterfall shower, the super hot and dry saunas, the separated sleeping areas with heat lamps, and the towel blankets. I wish North American culture didn’t think public baths are dirty and gay.

I can’t wait!!!
