DVD-RW Drives Are Cheap (And Crappy)
Saturday, December 8th, 2007I had a Lite-On SHW-1635S 16x DVD-RW for a long time and I definitely got my use out of it before it died earlier this year. Then I bought a LG GSA-H54N 18x DVD-RW by accident when I meant to buy the LG GSA-H54L which supports LightScribe. I chose the LG because it was a bit cheaper than the Pioneer model at the time and I thought I’d try to support Korean electronics. It crapped out on me last week after a short time of use. At first I thought I was just burning a heavily fragmented image and the disc was only burning at 1.8x at best. This continued to happen and I was sick of burning burning at less than 2x so today I bought a Pioneer DVR-112D and I’m burning at regular speeds again. There is also a RPC1 firmware available for it in case I should ever need it while my old LG did not have one available. Thus, I will not buy a LG optical drive for the foreseeable future and I really need more than 200GB of disc space.
